Nicolas Claisse

Nicolas Claisse, a draughtsman and ceramicist living in Paris, draws inspiration from early 20th-century American military propaganda postcards.

Fascinated by their graphic ambiguity and the homoerotic charge of these images, he reinterprets them on ceramic plates and mirrors. By diverting these drawings from their original function, he reveals their sensual beauty while inscribing them within the tradition of tableware. His works, both functional and symbolic, invite contemplation and dialogue. The mirror frames extend this exploration by confronting the viewer with scenes of a bygone masculinity.

Alongside this work, Nicolas Claisse creates trompe-l’œil catchall trays, frozen in ceramic like fossils of everyday life, paying tribute to ordinary objects. Each unique piece results from a precise process in which drawing, glazing, and firing merge to reveal a poetry of gesture and material.
